     Let me take this opportunity to welcome you to the web site of Limestone County. I hope the information provided will serve you in your quest for research of Limestone County.

     We are very proud of Limestone County and hope that you will visit us in person as well as on-line. Our county is experiencing phenomenal growth as people flock to Limestone County to experience the small-town atmosphere with big city convenience.

     Limestone County remains a rural county and ranks at the top of the list annually in cotton produce for the State of Alabama. Nursery stock production is also an important part of the agricultural community.

     Limestone County is highly accessible with Interstate 65 running the length of the county from North to South. Interstate 565 is here maintaining easy access to passenger planes. The Tennessee River also runs through the southern part of the County and has several launching areas for boats of all sizes. Elk River splits the Western end of the County and is also accessible from several launching areas.

     Fishing and hunting are favorite pastimes of many citizens here and Limestone County has become a favored destination for deer hunting and bass fishing.

     Calhoun Community College and Athens State University complement the Limestone County Educational system and many scholarships are awarded to deserving seniors every year.

     Steelcase, Delphi, Target Distribution Center, Brownsferry Nuclear Plant and others comprise a highly developed industrial community located in Limestone County.

     As you can see, we are proud of the quality of life and the opportunities for achievement that Limestone County offers. These are tangible incentives that Limestone County has to offer.

     The intangible incentives however, are the catalyst for the growth of Limestone County. The caring spirit of the people, the hospitality shown to travelers and visitors, and the genuine caring that is displayed throughout our community are the real reasons for the success of Limestone County. These qualities, that have come to be only a memory in the fast-paced lifestyle of many areas, are alive and well in Limestone County.      Limestone County is located in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The County is in the center of the Tennessee Valley with the Tennessee River running along the southern end of the county. The county name comes from a large creek, which flows through it, its bed of hard limestone. Limestone County rests on the northern bank of the mighty Tennessee River and stretches to the southern boundary of the State of Tennessee. Limestone County comprises an area of 565 square miles with a 2000 Census population of 65,676 with 18,967 people inside the City of Athens. Athens is the county seat located approximately 1.5 miles west of Interstate 65. Limestone County has an excellent highway system, which includes I-65, I-565, U.S. 31, U.S. 72, AL 20, AL 99, AL 127, and AL 251. Athens and Limestone County offer a community rich in Southern tradition, which is poised for tremendous future growth.

     The mission of the Limestone County Commission is to demonstrate good stewardship over financial resources, provide exceptional services to its citizens, and promote economic opportunities to enhance the quality of life for its people.
